Kenneth James Waud was born on 29 March 1919, the son of Louisa and Walter Ward, a pilot on the Humber. He was educated at Humberstone Foundation School.

 

In June 1937 Waud joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Newark branch. He was promoted to clerk in 1939. In his obituary, a colleague wrote of him, 'Young Waud was a lad with a pleasing personality and was well liked by all who came in contact with him.'

 

In February 1940 Waud left his job with the bank and joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was soon promoted to corporal and posted to East Asia. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese in March 1942. On 8 March 1945 Corporal Kenneth Waud died of malaria in a Japanese prisoner of war camp on Borneo. He was 25 years old. His family did not hear of his death until December that year.
