John Alexander Wood was born on 11 September 1911, the son of John and Margaret A Wood. In May 1929, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Buckie branch. In January 1937 he transferred to Aberdeen branch.
In September 1939 Wood left the bank to go on military service, and by 1940 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Gordon Highlanders, on active service in Belgium. He was killed in action there on 18 May 1940. He was 28 years old.
John Wood is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
