John Whittenbury was born in Nairobi in 1923, the son of Joseph and Ethel Whittenbury. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in 1940.
In November 1942 he left his job at the bank’s Hitchin branch to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Whittenbury was killed on 18 April 1945 as part of the crew of a Halifax bomber that was lost on a mission from RAF Leconfield, Yorkshire. He was 21 years old.
John Whittenbury is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Hitchin branch.
