John Ernest Wells was born on 14 December 1909, the son of Ernest Edward and Frances Hannah Wells. He was educated at Harrow County School for Boys.
In May 1928 Wells joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its London Princes Street office. He was promoted to clerk in 1930 and moved to Kilburn branch in 1934. Also in 1934 he married his fiancée, Dorothy, in Hammersmith. He moved to London Pont Street branch in 1940.
In June 1941 Wells left his job at the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 22 October 1944 Leading Aircraftman John Wells died of meningitis in the UK whilst on active service. He was 34 years old and left his widow, Dorothy, and their two young children.
