James Waddell

James Douglas Waddell was born on 23 August 1914. In March 1931, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Armadale branch. In April 1936 he transferred to the bank's London Bishopsgate office. 

 

In May 1940 Waddell left the bank to go on military service, becoming navigator in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was mentioned in dispatches for dropping a bomb on the deck of the German battleship Scharnhorst. Pilot Officer Waddell was killed in a flying accident on 17 January 1942. He was 27 years old.

 

James Waddell is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
