Adam Gardener McArthur Watson was born in Calderhead, Lanarkshire, in 1920, the son of Andrew F Watson and his wife Agnes McArthur Watson. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland at its Harthill branch. 

 

During the Second World War Watson left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 27 July 1943 Flying Officer Watson was part of the two-man crew of a Mosquito which took off from RAF Castle Camps, Essex, on a mission to Soesterberg airfield. The plan was damaged by enemy flak and crashed in Holland, killing both men on board. Flying Officer Watson was 22 years old.
