John Douglas Vinall was born on 5 September 1920, the son of Douglas Herbert Vinall, who worked for National Provincial Bank, and Una Margery Vinall. He was educated at Beckenham County School. After school he spent a few months as a shipping clerk with the Automobile Association.

 

In July 1937 Vinall joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its London Lombard Street branch. He was promoted to junior clerk three months later.

 

On the outbreak of war Vinall left his job at the bank to serve with the Royal Air Force. On 12 October 1942, Sergeant John Vinall was killed in action in Malta, when the Spitfire he was flying was shot down by enemy aircraft. He was 22 years old.
