Harry Nutt Unwin was born on 10 October 1918, the son of Harry Jackson Unwin and Sarah Elizabeth Unwin. He was educated at Chesterfield Grammar School.
In November 1935 Unwin joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Chesterfield branch. He was promoted to clerk and moved to Newark branch in April 1938. In his obituary, a colleague wrote of his time at the bank that '...he was a promising young man and deservedly well liked and popular in the district.'
In April 1940 Unwin left his job at the bank and joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He trained as a navigator and gained the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Harry Unwin was killed on 3 September 1941 when the Hampden bomber on which he was serving as observer was shot down on a mission to Berlin. He was 22 years old.
