John Turnham

John Edward Turnham was born on 16 September 1919. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its London Threadneedle Street office in September 1936. Outside work he was an enthusiastic sportsman, and represented the Trustee department on its cricket team. 

 

In December 1939 Turnham left the bank to go on war service, initially joining the army but later transferring to the Royal Air Force. He undertook training in Canada, on the completion of which he was commissioned and returned to England. Flying Officer Turnham was killed during air operations over France on 1 November 1942. He was 23 years old. His obituary in the bank's staff magazine recalled his loveable disposition and delicate sense of humour, and noted that 'his keenness and quick perception of detail gave promise of a successful career.'

 

John Turnham is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
