John Fisher Thwaite was born on 11 September 1921, the son of Fisher and Agnes Thwaite. He joined the staff of District Bank as a clerk at its Cockermouth branch in September 1939. He moved to Keswick branch in 1940 and to Ambleside branch in 1941.
In February 1942 Thwaite left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Thwaite was killed on 22 October 1943 as part of the crew of a Lancaster bomber which crashed in Hertfordshire during a training flight. He was 22 years old.
