Hugh Upton Howard Tripp was born on 26 January 1918, the son of the Reverend Henry Howard Tripp and his wife Mildred. He was educated at the Downs School, Clifton, and Bradfield College. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Bath branch in November 1936, and later transferred to Clifton Queen's Road branch, and then to Stokes Croft. Outside work he was interested in music and drama, and sometimes played in a hockey team made up of staff from Bristol banks.
During his time in Bath, Tripp served as a territorial soldier in the North Somerset Yeomanry. He later joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and was called to active duty as a pilot shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War.
Pilot Officer Tripp was killed on a bombing raid over Germany on 3 May 1941. He was 23 years old. His obituary in the bank's staff magazine remarked, 'he will be keenly missed by the staff of Stokes Croft branch, who will always remember his cheery smile and delightful personality.'
