Henry Lloyd David Tanner was born in London in 1921, the son of Charles William Tanner and his wife Lily Maud. In 1939 he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland at its Drummonds branch in London. 

 

In July 1940 Tanner left the bank to go on military service, becoming a pilot in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flight Lieutenant Tanner was killed in a flying accident on 14 April 1943. He was 21 years old. 

 

Henry Tanner is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
