Donald Farrar Turnbull was born on 9 May 1917, the son of Edward Turnbull and his wife. He was educated at Highgate School.

 

In September 1935 Turnbull joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its London Charing Cross branch. He moved to London Cheapside branch in 1936 and was promoted to clerk in 1938.

 

On the outbreak of war Turnbull left his job at the bank to serve in the army. By 1943 he was a sergeant in the Rifle Brigade. He was discharged from the army after an accident in June 1943. He never recovered enough to return to work at the bank, and after a year and a half on sick leave, formally left the bank’s service in early 1945. On 30 January 1947 Donald Turnbull died in the Royal Star and Garter Home, a nursing home for injured servicemen. He was 29 years old.
