Dennis Northmore Timms was born on 29 October 1918, the son of Edith and George H Timms. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Millom branch in May 1936. In 1939 he joined the Territorial Army. 

When the Second World War broke out in September 1939 Timms, as a member of the TA, was called up for full-time military service, joining an anti-tank battery of the Royal Artillery. Lieutenant Timms was killed while on special duty in England on 19 December 1941. He was 23 years old.
