Cyril Roy Tickle was born on 8 August 1920, the son of William and Sophia Tickle. He was educated at Launceston College.
In January 1939 Tickle joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Exeter branch. He was promoted to junior clerk in April 1939.
On the outbreak of war Tickle left his job at the bank to serve in the Royal Artillery. Less than a year later, on 26 May 1940, Gunner Cyril Tickle was killed in action in France, although his body was never recovered. He was 19 years old.
