William John Lawrence Sheer was born on 24 February 1897, the son of John and Rose Sheer. He was educated at Tellisford House School, Bristol and Plymouth Grammar School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank in March 1919 as a clerk at London City office.

On 8 November 1940 William Sheer was killed in his home at 11 St Leonard's Road, Ealing together with his wife Mabel and his sister Olive as a result of enemy bombing action. He was 43 years old.
