Walter Kell Stobbs was born on 3 July 1920, the son of Joseph and Gertude Stobbs. He was educated at Barnard Castle School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank in February 1937 as a probationer at Bishop Auckland branch. He was promoted to junior clerk a few months later and to clerk in July 1939.
On the outbreak of war in September 1939, he left the bank to go on war service in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Pilot Officer Stobbs was killed on 24 June 1941 during a raid on Kiel when his aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at Eilendorf, Germany. He was 20 years old.
