Robert Henry Stevens was born on 21 December 1916, the son of Nellie and Robert Samuel Stephens. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Foreign branch in June 1935. Outside work he was a keen swimmer and water polo player, representing the bank on its staff teams. He also loved music. 

 

In July 1940 Stevens left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Sergeant (air gunner and wireless operator) in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed during air operations in the Middle East on 5 November 1942. He was 25 years old.

 

Robert Stevens is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
