Leonard Scott

Bank: National Bank of Scotland

Place of work: Edinburgh Gorgie branch

Died: 17 February 1945

Leonard Goldie Scott was born in Dalkeith on 3 March 1920, the son of James and Florence Hilda Scott. He was educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh from 1928 until 1937, when he joined the staff of National Bank of Scotland at its Edinburgh Leith Walk branch. He later worked at branches in Slateford and Gorgie.

During the Second World War Scott left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Navy early in 1940 and training in Skegness. He was posted to HMS Bluebell, a ship escorting convoys in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and northern waters. Whilst preparing to escort a convoy on 17 February 1945 the ship was fired upon by a German U-boat and sunk within minutes off the coast of Murmansk in Russia. Coder Scott, along with almost all of the ship's 86-man crew, was killed. He was 24 years old.

Leonard Scott is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh
