John David William Stenhouse was born on 15 March 1922, the son of John and Florence Stenhouse. He was educated at Grove Central School and Plaistow Secondary School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at London Baker Street branch in August 1939. He moved to Liverpool Aintree branch a couple of months later and was promoted to junior clerk in November 1939. He moved to the Staff Department at the bank's London head office in March 1940. 

 

In October 1940 he left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He soon obtained his wings and began flying with Bomber Command. Flight Sergeant Stenhouse was killed on 1 March 1943 during a raid on Berlin when his aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at Voorst, Holland. He was 21 years old.
