John Sproat was born in Anwoth, Kirkcudbrightshire, in 1914, the son of John and Esther W Sproat. He was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy. After leaving school he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland.
During the Second World War Sproat left his job at the bank's head office to go on military service. He was commissioned in April 1941 and by 1944 was a Captain in the Royal Artillery. He was killed in action in Italy on 26 January 1944. He was 29 years old and left a widow, Margaret, whom he had married in 1941.
John Sproat is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.

Thank you for commemorating my great uncle, John Sproat, on your remembrance website.
In the 1970's I regularly visited John Sproat's family house, in Gatehouse of Fleet, and where his brother Jim still lived..
I was not aware of John’s story or the details relating to his military service until now, so thank you. Bruce McMichael (Natwest staff 1985-2002).
