Herbert George Smith was born in 1908, the son of James and Lucy Smith. In 1936 he went to work for The National Bank as a messenger at its head office branch in London on Old Broad Street. 

 

In September 1939 Smith left the bank to go on war service in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. Corporal Smith was killed in action in France on 25 May 1940. He was 32 years old and left a widow, Ellen. 

 

Herbert Smith is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 250 Bishopsgate, London.
