Harold Lewis Seward was born on 24 March 1920, the son of Percy and Frances Seward. He was educated at Chichester High School for Boys. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Southsea branch in December 1936. He was promoted to junior clerk a few months later and to clerk in April 1939. 

 

On the outbreak of war in September 1939, he left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 21 March 1941 Pilot Officer Seward was one of eight airmen killed when their Consolidated Catalina flying boat crashed into a hillside in Kinlough Valley, Leitrim. He was 21 years old.
