Francis Paul Sutton was born on 10 March 1916, the son of Rupert and Edith Sutton. He was educated at Oakham School. His father worked for National Provincial Bank as manager at its Towcester branch. Francis followed in his father's footsteps, joining the staff of Wellingborough branch in 1933. He later transferred to Southampton district and worked at several branches in that area, the last of which was Bitterne Park.

 

Sutton joined the Hampshire Territorials in 1938 and was mobilised for service at the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. He obtained his commission in 1940 with the Northamptonshire Regiment. He was evacuated from Dunkirk and took part in the first landing in Algeria. Just prior to the end of that campaign he returned to England and was attached to the Lincolnshire Regiment, with whom he landed in Normandy on D-Day. Lieutenant Sutton was killed in action in Holland on 14 October 1944. He was 28 years old.
