Derek John Nigel Southern was born on 23 April 1920, the son of John Coltman Southern and Helen Violet Southern. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Margate branch in May 1937. A colleague there later recalled that 'his charming disposition and his readiness to help in anything going ensured his place as a very popular young colleague.'

 

Outside work Southern was - from 1938 - a member of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was mobilised for active service at the outbreak of the Second World War. He spent some time as an instructor and was awarded the Air Force Medal in October 1941. He was subsequently commissioned and moved to an operational role. 

 

Flying Officer Southern was killed on air operations over enemy territory on 8 April 1943. He was 22 years old.
