David Crofton Smith was born on 23 August 1921, the son of Harry Watson Smith and his wife Olive. He was educated at Rossall School and joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Chesterfield branch in October 1939. 

 

In August 1941 he left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. After some preliminary training in England he went to America to complete his training, and gained his wings in July 1942. After returning to England Flight Sergeant Smith spent some months on Coastal Command operations before being transferred to Bomber Command. He was close to receiving his commission when he was killed over enemy territory on 13 May 1943. He was 21 years old.

 

David Smith is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Chesterfield branch.
