Cyril Clucas Sykes was born on 13 July 1909, the son of Percival and Beatrice Sykes. He worked for National Provincial Bank at its Newcastle upon Tyne branch.
In October 1941 he left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Pilot Office Sykes was killed on 11 April 1944 when his aircraft was shot down by anti-aircraft fire and crashed close to Seriphos Island, in the Aegean Sea. He was 34 years old and left a widow, Jean, whom he had married in 1940, and a baby son.
