Cyril James Scrivener was born on 7 April 1921, the son of Stanley and Daisy Scrivener. He was educated at Archbishop Tenison's Central School, Croydon. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at London Cornhill branch in May 1937. He was promoted to junior clerk a few months later and to clerk in October 1939. In January 1940 he moved to Dorking branch.
In January 1941 he left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He gained his wings and commission in September of that year and began operational duties over Germany. In July 1943 he did not return from an operational flight to attack an enemy aerodrome in Holland. It was later confirmed that Flight Lieutenant Scrivener had been killed when his Mustang was shot down on 7 July 1943. He was 22 years old.
