Charles Noel Douglas Stewart was born on 7 August 1904, the son of Edward and Amelia Stewart. He was educated at Eggar's School, Alton, Hampshire. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Alton branch in April 1921. He was promoted to clerk in October 1923 and moved to London City office in January 1927 and then to Guildford branch in April 1936. 

 

Stewart obtained his pilot's certificate from the London Aeroplane Club on 11 June 1930 and joined 600 Squadron Auxiliary Air Force as an aircraft hand. He was mobilised for service with the Royal Auxiliary Air Force just before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. After completing his training he was posted to 604 Squadron at Northolt and served throughout the Battle of Britain. Flight Sergeant Stewart was killed on 31 May 1942 during a raid on Cologne. His aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed on the west bank of the River Maas, Holland. He was 38 years old and left a widow, Pamela, whom he had married in 1937.
