Bernard Sides was born on 6 July 1920, the son of Herbert and Mary Sides. He was educated at Xaverian College, Manchester, and joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Northenden branch in September 1937.

 

In September 1940 Sides left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Pilot Officer Sides was killed in action on 21 January 1942 as part of the crew of a Whitley bomber which failed to return from air operations over Germany. He was 21 years old.
