Arthur Malcolm Snape was born on 2 April 1925, the son of Frank and Lucy Snape. He was educated at Urmston Grammar School and joined the staff of District Bank as a temporary clerk at its Salford branch in January 1942. His older brother, Frank, had also worked for District Bank, at its Manchester 55 King Street branch, but had left the bank to join the RAF in 1940.
In May 1943 Arthur Snape also left the bank to go on war service, joining the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. On 16 April 1945, two weeks after his 20th birthday, Sub-Lieutenant Snape was killed in a plane crash while undertaking a navigational exercise over the Isle of Arran from his base on the aircraft carrier HMS Glory. His brother Frank survived the war and returned to District Bank in 1946.
