Arthur Kenneth Scales was born on 19 May 1921, the son of Archibald and Marie Scales. He was educated at Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Warwick Gardens branch in August 1937. He was promoted at junior clerk a few months later. His brother, Norman Scales, also worked for the bank, at its St Albans branch.
As a Territorial, Arthur was mobilised for service with the Royal Artillery just before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. He served most of the next four years posted to an anti aircraft unit in East Anglia. Gunner Scales died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds at a military camp in Suffolk on 26 June 1943. He was 22 years old.
