Henry Adrian Charles Roden was born on 22 August 1916, the son of Marion Dougal Roden. In April 1933, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow Alexandra Parade branch. In July 1939 he transferred to Glasgow Maryhill branch.
Not long afterwards, in September 1939, Roden left the bank to go on military service, becoming a pilot in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Roden died on 16 November 1940 of injuries sustained in a crash landing after a successful action against enemy aircraft over southern England. He was 24 years old.
Henry Roden is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
