Harold Joseph Read was born on 19 August 1923, the son of Harold William and Lilian Rose Read. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its London Paddington (Marble Arch) branch in February 1941, after receiving a month's training at the bank's machine accountancy school. 

He later left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Trooper in the Royal Armoured Corps. He died in the Netherlands on 22 January 1945. He was 21 years old.
