Donald Robertson
Bank: Westminster Bank
Place of work: Birkenhead branch
Died: 6 January 1944
Donald Robertson, known to his bank colleagues as Robbie, was born on 9 May 1921, the son of Robert Malcolm Robertson and his wife Louisa. He was educated at Wirral Grammar School and joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Birkenhead branch in April 1938.
In October 1941 he left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Flight Sergeant (Navigator) in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed during air operations over Poland on 6 January 1944. He was 22 years old. A bank colleague recalled, 'Always cheerful and willing, with an aptitude for his work well above the average, Robbie was well-liked by all. The bank has lost one who would probably have gone far in its service, and his colleagues will miss his quizzical smile and ever-willing cooperation. It seems difficult to realise that we shall not have his vital personality with us again when the war is over.'
Donald Robertson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Birkenhead Charing Cross branch.
