Cyril Quickenden
Bank: Westminster Bank
Place of work: London Chiswick branch
Died: 4 March 1941
Cyril Arthur Quickenden (known to his bank colleagues as Gus) was born on 8 April 1910, the son of William Vaughan Thomas Quickenden, a bank manager, and his wife Lizzie.
He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in November 1927, and from August 1934 worked at the bank's London Chiswick branch. Outside work he was a dedicated and successful oarsman, secretary of the bank's rowing club. He rowed for the club at Henley Regatta for six years, and was a member of the record-breaking crew that reached the semi-final of the Thames Challenge Cup in 1934.
Just before the Second World War broke out, Quickenden left the bank to serve as a Paymaster Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He was killed in an accident on 4 March 1941. He was 30 years old and left a widow, Joan, and a baby daughter, born a year earlier.
Cyril Quickenden is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Chiswick branch.
