William Peebles was born in about 1921, the son of George and Elizabeth Peebles. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland at its Edinburgh Blackhall branch.
Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War Peebles joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was called up at the beginning of September 1939, and by June 1940 had completed his training and was serving as a wireless operator on Blenheims.
On 7 May 1941 he was part of the crew of a Catalina attempting a night landing on Lough Erne in Northern Ireland. The plane crashed, killing all ten men on board. Flight Sergeant Peebles was 19 years old.
William Peebles is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
