John Dales Proudlock was born on 28 January 1912, the son of Emily and Edmund Arcangelo Proudlock of Middlesbrough. He was educated at Middlesbrough High School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank at Stockton-on-Tees branch as a probationer in December 1928. He was appointed a junior clerk at Stockton-on-Tees effective from April 1929 and progressed to the post of clerk at the same branch in 1931. He transferred to Pudsey branch in 1933 then to Leeds branch in 1936.
Outside work Proudlock was an officer in the territorial army, and on 1 September 1939, shortly before the outbreak of war, he was called up for full time military service. Within months he rose to the rank of Captain. He died at sea on 18 May 1940, and was buried at Reykjavik. He was 28 years old and left a widow, Charlotte, and a young son.
