David Russell Pollard was born on 8 January 1919, the son of Donald Farnham Pollard and Emily Nicholls Pollard. Donald was a banker, who worked for Manchester & County District Bank (later known as District Bank) throughout his career, eventually rising to to the post of chief general manager in 1949. His son David joined the bank's staff as a junior at its Eccleshall branch in February 1937.
In October 1939 David Pollard left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers and later the Cheshire Regiment. By 1943 he held the rank of Lieutenant and was serving in Italy. He was killed in action there on 11 September 1943. He was 24 years old.
