Alasdair Lespie Hamilton Polson was born on 27 August 1923 in Stevenston, Ayrshire, the son of John Sutherland Polson and his wife Elizabeth Macdonald Polson. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland at its Wishaw branch.
During the Second World War Polson left the bank to join the Royal Navy. On 17 December 1942 he was part of the crew of HMS Firedrake, an F-class destroyer leading a convoy of ships bound for Canada. The ship was sunk by a U-boat, killing 114 of its 140-man crew, including Able Seaman Polson. He was 19 years old.
Alasdair Polson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
