Robert Travers O'Neill was born on 27 May 1921, the son of Alice and Robert David O'Neill. He was educated at Hampstead Garden Suburb Elementary school and at Christ College, Finchley, and he joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its London office in September 1937. A year later he moved to the bank's foreign department, also located in the London office.  

 

In March 1942 O'Neill left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and being commissioned as a Pilot Officer two months later. Just a month after that, on 16 June 1942, Pilot Officer O'Neill was killed as the result of a flying accident whilst training with a Blenheim bomber. He was 21 years old.
