Robert Francis Nunn was born on 15 October 1916, the son of William Nunn and his wife. He was educated at Magdalen College School, Brackley.

 

In February 1934, Nunn joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Sleaford branch. He was promoted to clerk in 1936 and moved to Hucknall branch in 1937. Also in that year he married Dorothy, and they had two children in the following two years. At work Nunn was the secretary of the bank's cricket club and he enjoyed playing golf. A colleague said of him that 'It can be said without qualification that he was liked by all who came in contact with him.' Nunn left his job at the bank to join the armed forces in 1940.

 

Nunn was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1941. On 2 March 1945, Captain Robert Nunn was killed on active service in the Netherlands. He was 28 years old and left his widow, Dorothy, and their two young children.
