Richard Kenneth Nixon was born in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, on 14 February 1923, the son of William and Charlotte Florence Nixon. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its Darlington branch in November 1939, when he was 16 years old.

 

He later left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Sergeant (Navigator) in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 8 July 1944 he was part of the crew of a Lancaster bomber from RAF East Kirby, Lincolnshire, taking part in a mission over France. His was one of 31 Lancasters shot down during the raid. Sergeant Nixon was 21 years old.
