Clifford Neighbour was born on 19 June 1920, the son of Sidney Thomas and Lilian Gladys Neighbour. He was educated at Bedford School, where he won school colours at both rugby and cricket.
After leaving school in 1937 Neighbour joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Hitchin branch. Outside work he became a territorial soldier, serving as an officer in the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment. He was called to active service in August 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War.
On 30 March 1943 Lieutenant Neighbour was reported missing in action in Burma. He was later presumed to have been killed on that day. He was 22 years old. His obituary in the bank's staff magazine recalled, 'Possessed of a genial manner and a good sense of humour, he made many friends, both in the bank and amongst his townsmen'.
Clifford Neighbour is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Hitchin branch.
