William Murray Moncrieff was born in 1924, the son of John and Majorie Forbes Moncrieff. He worked for National Bank of Scotland at its Edinburgh West End branch.

 

During the Second World War Moncrieff left the bank to serve in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. By early 1945 he was a Sub-Lieutenant, based at the naval air station HMS Landrail, near Campbeltown, Argyll. He was killed in a plane crash on the Isle of Jura on 2 January 1945. He was 20 years old.
