William Redfern Millington was born on 9 November 1922. He joined the staff of District Bank as a clerk at its Ashton-under-Lyne branch in November 1939. In December 1941 he moved to Hyde branch.
In April 1942 Millington left the bank to go on military service, joining the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. By 1945 he was based at HMS Daedalus, the main administrative centre of the Fleet Air Arm. Sub-Lieutenant Millington was reported missing, later presumed killed, on 24 July 1944, while on patrol off the coast of France. He was 21 years old.
