William McNinch

William Matthew McNinch was born on 19 June 1912, the son of James and Elizabeth Bridget McNinch. In May 1931, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow Hutchesontown branch. In March 1936 he transferred to Glasgow Bath Street branch.
In October 1939 McNinch left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Lance Sergeant in the Royal Armoured Corps and Special Air Service Regiment. In the course of his service he was awarded the Military Medal and mentioned in dispatches.
Lance Sergeant McNinch was killed in action in Italy on 5 October 1943. He was 31 years old.
William McNinch is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
