Stanley Morris

Bank: Westminster Bank

Place of work: London Threadneedle Street office

Died: 7 April 1943

Stanley Morris, known to his bank colleagues as Stan, was born on 31 July 1919, the son of Ernest and Annie Eleanor Morris. In July 1936 he joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its London Threadneedle Street office. A bank colleague later recalled, 'a quiet, yet unfailing humour, which attached him to all those with whom he came into contact, masked a sterling and unobtrusive character. Both at work and play his keenness was well marked.' He was a member of the bank's sports club, especially interested in golf.

As war loomed in the late 1930s, Morris signed up to become a territorial soldier. He later left the bank to go on full time military service, and was drafted to Egypt in June 1942. In September 1942 he transferred to the Cheshire Regiment.

Corporal Morris died on 7 April 1943 as a result of wounds received in action in North Africa. He was 23 years old.

Stanley Morris is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
