Ronald Austen Seymour Mitchell was born on 9 January 1911, the son of Eliza and George James Mitchell. He worked as a bank clerk for National Provincial Bank.
During the Second World War Mitchell served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer as a wireless operator and air gunner. On 3 November 1942, Mitchell was part of a convoy escort mission in the western Mediterranean on board a Catalina aircraft. The plane lost all contact and did not return to base, and the crew were subsequently declared lost at sea. Flight Sergeant Mitchell was 31 years old and left a widow, Rita, whom he had married in 1937.
