Peter Alexander Mills was born on 20 February 1918, the son of Ella Violet and Alexander Thomas Mills, a bank manager. He was educated at Whitgift School, Croydon, after which he joined the staff of his father’s bank, National Provincial Bank, starting as a probationer at South Croydon branch in August 1934. He was promoted to junior clerk in November 1934, and to clerk in 1937.
At the end of August 1939, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Mills left the bank to go on war service with the York and Lancaster Regiment. Second Lieutenant Mills served in the Middle East and died there on 12 February 1942 of wounds sustained in action. He was 23 years old.
